Designer and Project Manager, Flatland Resources

My name is David Hileman. I'm a designer and project manager for a small consulting firm here in town called Flatland Resources. We do some ecological restoration as well as some build landscapes. I'm involved in all stages of the project. From the very beginning in terms of client meetings to putting together cost estimates and bids and proposals as well as doing some design work, and then even doing project management and project oversight if it's a construction project that we are hired to do oversight for. In the last few years, we have been working with the city of Muncie and the Sanitary District on a street revitalization project in downtown Muncie on Walnut Street. So for six blocks we kind of re-built the infrastructure. All new brick pavers, permeable pavers to allow for infiltration of storm water, seating spaces at every intersection, and just creating a general new, fresh, vibrant look for downtown Muncie. Usually I spend a few hours, two to three hours, out on a project site doing construction oversight, whether that's checking up on the contractor, seeing how their progress is going, answering any of the questions they have, talking to sub-contractors, trying to manage their work with what the client is wanting as well making sure the project is still on task. Working on other projects, making sure they're up to date. Usually in the fall is our busiest time of year in terms of putting together proposals for next year's work schedule. We will receiving requests for proposals or requests for qualifications from clients and future clients hopefully and municipalities and other agencies asking us to submit prices and proposals for work. Spend a couple hours putting together or working on a proposal and then kind of helping around the office too. So we're very team oriented so if somebody needs help with something we're willing to go all hands on deck to help them complete a task.
